Expert Q&A

| By Mindy Hudon Speech and Language Pathologist | ||
My grandson is 4 and seems to have problems pronouncing the letter "c." Cookie is "tooky" and cake is "take." He doesn't see to have any other problems other than the "c" and "k" sound. Are there any exercises we could do with him to help? All of his other language skills seem right on.

Many kids this age have trouble with producing "g," "k" and "c" sounds. These sounds are actually produced in the same location in your mouth. They are made with the back of your tongue. Your grandson may have trouble understanding that at this point. I would suggest the book Teach Me How to Say it Right by Dorothy Doherty. Doherty is a speech and language pathologist who suggests fun activities to use in play to enrich sound development. Also, if you continue to be concerned about his speech, contact your local school system for a speech and language evaluation.
