| By Mindy Hudon Speech and Language Pathologist | ||
My daughter is 34 months old. We are living California by the end of July or beginning of August to return to Brazil. My husband and I just speak with her in Portuguese at home, our native language. We really would like her to learn English and she is learning already from her daycare. Do you think she'll remember everything that she has been learning or she will forget?

I applaud you for encouraging multi-languages in your home. However, in order for your daughter to remember and learn English she will need to be exposed to this language. At this point, her primary language is Portuguese. If you want her to continue to learn English then you or your husband need to talk to her in that language too. Choose who will speak English and who will speak Portuguese to her in your home. Your daughter should learn when and with whom to speak each language. Obviously she will constantly be exposed to Portuguese in Brazil so that language will be enriched on a daily basis.
