Expert Q&A

By Mindy Hudon
Speech and Language Pathologist

I try not compare my 3-year-old to other kids, but he seems really behind in terms of speech. He can say "juice," "daddy," "mommy", "car" and "hat," but some things he says so fast that they make no sense. He also cannot say a sentence. What should I do?

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, most" 2- to 3-year-old children can typically speak in at least two- to three-word sentences and they are usually understood by familiar listeners. From the description of your child, your concerns appear to be warranted. Discuss them with your pediatrician and ask him for a referral to a speech and language pathologist or visit www.asha.org for a clinic in your area. Birth to Three organizations will often evaluate children and provide you with answers to your questions.
