Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

We are struggling with bedtime ever since daylight saving time began. Can you tell me what the correct amount of sleep is for a 3-year-old, a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old?

Sleep needs vary greatly from child to child. Younger children typically need 10-12 hours per day; an 8 year old may need 8-10 hours per day. Regardless, you want to make sure that your child awakens from sleep well rested, ready to learn and participate in all activities.
