My son will miss starting kindergarten by two weeks, but is ready to go. What should I do?

I have a feeling that if your son has gained all of those skills already, you would not be able to stop him from progressing if you tried! I would certainly go ahead with his reading and math activities, but just make sure that he is getting as well rounded an education as possible (trips to museums, hands-on science activities, a variety of art experiences, etc.). I'm sure that you'll also try to schedule plenty of time for creative play experiences, physical development and music experiences. Is there any chance that you could enroll him in private kindergarten, since he misses the public school cutoff by such a short time? If not, you are definitely right that he will be ahead of most of the other children. You may need to supplement his schooling with enrichment courses on the weekend and in the summer to keep his interest. It is important that he not be isolated from his peers simply because he is ahead educationally. Good luck!
