Expert Q&A

By Michael F. Wasserman
General Pediatrician

If a 3-year-old falls and hits his forehead hard enough to develop a lump and bruise, is a doctor's visit warranted? What should I look for in order to keep my child safe after a fall?

The lump that you feel is simply the external collection of blood on the outside of the skull. As a physician, I worry about children who lose consciousness, act differently than usual, have unequal pupil size or don't use their hands or feet properly. Of course, if the parent has any concern about anything out of the ordinary, seek medical attention.
