Expert Q&A

Is it premature to diagnose a 3-year-old with ADHD?

Yes, I believe that it is quite premature to diagnose a 3-year-old with ADHD. Many of the characteristics that teachers, parents, and even doctors use to diagnose ADHD are based on the SCHOOL AGED child's inability to concentrate or sit still. These are perfectly NORMAL characteristics of a healthy 3-year-old! Yes, of course, some 3s may be much more active than others, but it is way too soon to know if this high activity level will continue. Remember that formal schooling will occur in a time nearly as far away as all the years he or she has been alive!

Another characteristic is excessive aggression. Again, you may have a 3-year-old who is quite aggressive, grabs toys, has trouble sharing, and then becomes quite cooperative at age 4 when his or her language skills improve and social understanding develops. Many of the characteristics of ADHD displayed at a young age may be associated with other factors, such as the recent arrival of a sibling, delayed speech, emotional disturbances at home, or immature social/emotional development. I would definitely get at least a second opinion. And I would definitely NOT give my young child any drugs for this disorder.
