I can't get my 5-year-old to stop swearing. What can I do?
Often preschoolers test out the power of using maladaptive words and phrases to let the world know that they're the boss and can talk like it. As parents, we become painfully aware of our children's ability to mimic words (good and bad). Swearing can only be learned (like all language) by exposure to it. So, as parents, we would limit the opportunities our children has to hear unpleasant words. Monitor television, friends and your own language to eliminate swearing from the child's vocabulary.
Also, remember to talk to your child as you want to be talked to and decide what constitutes swearing in your family.
