Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

Is it normal for a 4-year-old to have breast development to the point of needing a training bra?

Some early breast development is becoming more and more common. However, it shouldn't be to the point of needing a change in clothing or adding a training bra at the age of 4. Your daughter may have a sensitive end organ (breast tissue) response to normal circulating estrogen. That's something to bring up on your next regular pediatrician visit.

The other questions that come to mind are about height and other adult development. Is she taller than average or of normal height for her age, and are there other early signs of development, like pubic hair? If there are other factors involved, you may want to enlist the help of an endocrinologist to make sure that there is nothing health threatening going on in her stages of development."
