Expert Q&A

By John Dorsey, M.D.
Pediatrician

My son is at my ex-husband's house every other weekend, and for the last five or six months, he has been having bowel movements and urinating on the floor without even an attempt to get to the bathroom. I have had a few bedwetting incidents with him but nothing like my ex-husband is reporting. My son lets me know that he has to go, and he heads to the bathroom. We have started counseling, but I am trying to gather as much information as possible. Any advice?

You didn't mention the age of your son, but no matter his age, it sounds like a deep-seeded problem. It sounds like he is expressing his unhappiness of something or many things with this bodily function. As a pediatrician, I always suggest ruling out some sort of physical problem causing the situation. If you have done that, then counseling is the right way to go."
