Expert Q&A

By Adolph Brown
Psychologist

My 8-year-old son still wets the bed and I don't want to give him medication. I've used the alarms and they don't work û he sleeps through them. Are there other things I can try?

If a child has a problem not waking to use the bathroom, parents can assist the child by waking him or her during periodic intervals throughout the night. If bedwetting takes on a particular nightly pattern, parents should devise a plan of action accordingly. Parents may also wish to consult a urologist or the child's pediatrician for further investigation and to rule out possible physiological causes and/or explanations. Remember to safeguard your child's self-esteem by protecting him or her from becoming embarrassed, angry or frustrated."
