Expert Q&A

By Mindy Hudon
Speech and Language Pathologist

Where is a good place to find videotapes, CDs, etc., for teaching my child different languages?

I think the Internet or your local library is a great place to look for bilingual children's videotapes. Although videotapes are fun and educational, your child will learn best from bilingual language modeling from interaction with adults who speak that language. Children develop language rapidly in the first few years of life. Any type of language enrichment is best coming from a "real" person rather than a videotape or CD. Videotapes, music CDs and books should be used as a supplement to good modeling in any language."
