Tips and Ideas to Help Toddlers and Preschoolers with Color Recognition

  • Take your little one grocery shopping. "Head to the produce section, and have fun together selecting fruits and vegetables in the color you're working on," says Cindy Holton-Vance, a Montessori educator in West Monroe, La. "Then you have the added bonus of eating them afterward, so you're building color recognition skills and healthy eating habits."
  • Looking for books with a colorful theme? "An easy way to find early childhood books with a color in the title is by going to the book department at Amazon.com and typing in one color word in the search box," McTaggart says. "For example, by typing in 'red,' you will find Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Lois Ehlert, Clifford, the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell, The Red Balloon by Albert Lamorisse, My Red Balloon by Stella Blackstone and Mary Wore Her Red Dress and Henry Wore His Green Sneakers by Merle Peek."

    • Finally, never underestimate the power of a little something sweet every now and then. Sara VanderClute and her family have had great success teaching her 2-year-old grandson, Dixon, about colors by offering him one M&M at a time. "Now, he'll ask for them by color," says VanderClute of Fayetteville, N.C. "And heaven help if you give him a blue one when he has asked for a yellow one!"

    Colors of the Month

    Each month we will feature a Color of the Month and will offer different activities to reinforce that color.

    • October's color is orange!
    • November's color is brown!
    • December's color is blue!
    • January's color is white!
    • February's color is red!
    • March's color is green!

    Good afternoon. You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
