Cashiers, North Carolina
Patriotic Mountain Traditions
By Pam Prevatt Woll
The synchronized clacking of tap shoes, a mesmerizing rainbow of petticoats twirling on stage and the thunder of applause from the audience signals the onset of the annual 4th of July celebration at one of the last rustic inns built in the early 1900s. High Hampton Inn, in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Cashiers, N.C., is the place to be.
The Southern Appalachian Cloggers please the crowd every year at the annual picnic on the lawn of High Hampton Inn. As the mood heightens, guests are encouraged to ascend the stage to join in a square dance or two. But it is not only this fellowship of young and old that keeps the attendees coming back year after year; the celebrations offer countless opportunities for fun.
All during the day, there are amusing family competitions such as father-daughter boat races, greased watermelon passing, swimming races and family feud volleyball. The cider-making demonstration is both educational and tasty. Guided hikes to the wetlands and Beaver Pond add to the adventurous atmosphere. Just before dinner, children enjoy face painting and carnival games.
Keeping with southern tradition, the food is plentiful. Dinner is served buffet style featuring southern fried chicken, buttermilk biscuits, fresh mountain trout, corn on the cob and their famous black bottom pie. The massive American flag cake, with its whipped cream stars over a bed of fresh blueberries and strawberries for stripes, is as tasty as it looks. Following dinner, stuffed or not, there is the roasting of marshmallows over an open fire and the making of S'mores.
