The True Meaning of Christmas

Teaching Your Kids About Goodwill

"Every year my sons choose a name from the tree, and we purchase a gift, wrap it and place it back under the tree for the child," says Michelle Robere of Kitchener, Ontario. Robere and her sons have always participated in the Angel Tree program that is sponsored every year at various department stores across the country. "It's a great way to show my kids, who have everything, that giving is so much better than receiving," she says.

The gifts go to local children whose parents sign them up because they are unable to provide them with that one special gift on their Santa list. The names are hung from a tree with the age of the child and what the child is wishing for.

Churches
Local churches are especially grateful for the extra help in donations during the holiday season. Donations of warm clothing, blankets, socks and mittens are much appreciated by those who are in need during the winter months.

Nursing Homes
During the holiday season there are a lot of elderly people who are without their loved ones. Contact a nursing home or residential care facility in your area and schedule a visit. Bring along a tasty treat, and spend some time making new friends. This is a wonderful way to bring happiness to someone during the holidays. Teaching your child to give of himself is the ultimate act of goodwill.

Every child should have the opportunity to share in the joy and goodwill of the holiday season. Set an example this year and share the true meaning of Christmas with your child!
