Tips for Developing Gratitude in Your Life

We've given you lots of ways to instill a sense of gratitude in your children, but are you, yourself, grateful? Barry Neil Kaufman, founder of The Option Institute in Sheffield, Mass., and author of Happiness Is a Choice (Ballantine Books, 1994), offers the following ways to cultivate gratitude in your life:

  • Stretch yourself to see gratitude where you haven't seen it before.
  • Ask yourself, "How can I let the people in my life know that I am grateful for their presence in my life?" Communicate your thankfulness to your children, your spouse, your friends, your coworkers and even the cashier at the supermarket.
  • Express your gratitude every day. Don't wait for special occasions to be outwardly appreciative of what you have in your life.
  • Be lavish with your thankfulness. Don't hold back.
  • When you get angry or upset, stop, take a deep breath and notice the things you do have to be grateful for, like warm shoes on your feet or a bird flying across a cloudless sky.
