A Need for Needles?
Part Two
By Carma Haley
"Now that I know that I can ask questions and that I can make objections, I do," says Rexroat. "My youngest has had all of her shots to date as scheduled but if something doesn't feel right or if she is sick, I'm going to wait before allowing her to get any more. I think that if more parents would educate themselves, they would do the same thing."
As the immunization controversy continues, parents should have no problem finding information for both sides. There are a variety of Web sites available that offer books, free newsletters and updated information. In addition, sources closer to home are also available. "You can go down to the public library and get a copy of the state immunization laws," says Fisher. "Most libraries carry various periodicals or magazines that often run articles related to immunization issues. Medical journals and publications are also available at most branches as well. You can also contact the National Vaccine Information Center as we have helped parents who are trying to find information on their state laws."
"It is worth the time and effort to educate yourself as much as possible on vaccines," says Fisher. "When something happens to your child it's you, not the doctor, not the health department official, not the guy in Washington that is sitting there and that is going to have to deal with it. It's going to be your child and you."
