A Need for Needles?
Part Two
By Carma Haley
"When looking at those states that have the wider religious, conscientious, personal or philosophical exemption, you find that the uptake of vaccinations in those states is no lower than in other states," says Fisher. "There is no more disease in those states than in other states. This is quite a good argument to make showing that we ought to have the right to voluntary informed consent to vaccination and that it will not significantly alter the health care picture in this country."
As medical science has not yet concluded statistical facts related to the dangers or immunizations, parents' only means of defense against immunization complications, injuries and death is education. Fisher recommends beginning your education in your own state and learning what laws apply to you and your children. "You just have to become educated; you have to do your own research project," says Fisher. "You need to understand that the diseases carry risks and complications but that the vaccines also carry risks -- some of which can be quite significant. The most important thing you can do for your child is to become an educated health care consumer and that means also becoming an educated vaccine consumer."
