A Millennium Baby For the Berenstain Bears
By Donna Smith
The Birds, The Bees and The Berenstain Bears introduces young children to some of the new words they will hear during pregnancy: ultrasound, womb, delivery and birth canal. These concepts are not discussed in detail, but just enough information is given to get a conversation going with a child about these strange new words.
"Sister Bear notices that Mama's lap is getting smaller and wonders if, perhaps, Mama has been eating too much," says Jan Berenstain. "Mama uses Sister's questions as an opportunity to tell Sister that a new baby sister or brother is on the way. Mama then takes Sister on a simple, straightforward learning experience, which includes age-appropriate explanations or pregnancy." Dr. Gert Grizzly, who delivered Sister Bear and Brother Bear as well, answers more of Sister Bear's questions. Sister is quick to accept all the new information bestowed on her. As Jan and Stan put it in the book, "Sister could accept that."
The Berenstains together have written and illustrated more than 80 children's books, with more than 150 million copies sold. Children of all ages are touched in some way by these magical books. Parents and children alike can relate to the mishaps and mayhem, love and understanding, the members of this bear family share. "Both children and adults write and e-mail us voluminously saying the Bear family is so much like their family that they suspect we are looking in their windows," according to this writing team. What else is in store for the Bear family in 2000? "We will try to continue doing what we've always done: bring light and humor to the situations, concerns and conflicts all families experience." The team will take their courage in their hands again and write a book about a very controversial subject: guns. "It will be a Big Chapter Book (our slightly older series) called The Berenstain Bears and No Guns Allowed." Following that book, the Berenstains will cover the topic of bad language.
