A Whole Year of Toddler Activities

Toddlers have an amazing sense of curiosity and adventure. Here are some activities to do with your toddler throughout the whole year.

January: Snow Day
Bundle up for an hour of snow angels and snowmen. When you're done, head in where it's warm and make Snow Cream.

You'll need:
4 to 5 cups of clean, unpacked snow (store in freezer until needed)
1 cup half-and-half
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Dash of salt

Combine the half-and-half, sugar, vanilla and salt. Stir in the snow until it's the consistency of ice cream. Make it thicker (and healthier!) by stirring in a mashed ripe banana. Try different flavors like mint, almond, orange or lime.

February: Museum Fun
Children's museums are great for hands-on activities. Once you've enjoyed your time there, keep up the tactile fun at home.

Water play: While you cook dinner, let them stand at the sink and use plastic cups and spoons to play in a few inches of water.
Indoor beach: Fill a bucket partway with sand or bird seed and let them explore, dig and pour.
Play dough: Another tactile treat to be patted, poked and prodded.
Finger painting: Make construction paper hearts and let your toddler decorate for gifts to give siblings or grandparents for Valentine's Day.

March: Cloud Watching
Take a blanket outside and lie down where you can see the clouds. Talk about what you see in them even geometrical shapes like circles and squares. Explain how clouds are floating in the air. Then make homemade bubbles for more floaty fun!

Use one part dish detergent, 10 parts water and .25 parts glycerin (sold at pharmacies) or white corn syrup. Mix together very gently and pour into a pie pan to use. Make "wands" with wires bent to the proper shape or even twist ties. Talk about how the bubbles float like clouds in the air.
